Jimmy’s Cambridge is marking 30 years of service to the homeless community this year.
Founded in 1995 as Cambridge’s first year-round emergency night shelter, Jimmy’s has grown and developed through the years, always with people at the heart of everything we do.
The support Jimmy’s provides makes a substantial difference to the homeless community in Cambridge. We offer a number of types of accommodation ranging from an emergency hostel, a service for people with multiple needs, shared housing and innovative Modular Homes.
Wherever the location, the team of Jimmy’s support workers works alongside each individual resident to help break the cycle of homelessness in the city.
Throughout 2025 you will hear from people who have been involved in Jimmy’s over the last 3 decades. We are also excited to bring you a number of new ways to get involved in this, a very special year.
The truth is, we would all hope that our services were no longer needed 30 years on from opening but, sadly the need is more prevalent than ever. A recent survey from Shelter said that homelessness in East of England was up 20% in 2024 and we know at any time in Cambridge there are sadly between 20 and 30 people sleeping rough.
Having said that, we do want to take this occasion to celebrate all the people who have made Jimmy’s what it is over the years. From our founders, to our staff, volunteers and supporters who have made all of the work we do possible. And of course, our residents, so many of whom have walked through our doors at their most vulnerable but, with time, patience and a lot of hard work, on their part as well as our support workers, have managed to turn their lives around and have moved on to more independent, happier and fulfilled lives!
There are of course those who haven’t been quite ready (our door is always open for when they want to try again) and those who we have sadly lost along the way. We take this moment to remember them all.
Thank you to everyone who has made Jimmy’s what it is now in 2025. The City of Cambridge is an amazing place to be and we are grateful to our community for helping us break the cycle of homelessness.
We will be sharing lots of new and exciting events to celebrate our 30th year. Make sure you are subscribed to our newsletter to be the first to know.
