This World Homeless Day, we were delighted to welcome trainers to come into Jimmy’s to provide First Aid and Naloxone training to residents, volunteers and staff.
This session was suggested and organised by a resident with the support of our east Road team leader. The training covered two key areas: basic first aid and overdose response. Some of the basic first aid included learning how to provide CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) which can be life-saving, plus choking and the recovery position.
When it comes to overdose response, participants were taught about Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, which is a medication that can rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. Its availability and proper use have become key tools in reducing opioid-related deaths. Participants received thorough instruction on how to use naloxone, learning to recognise the signs of an overdose, administer the injection, and provide follow-up care until professional help arrives. The hands-on aspect of the training helps build confidence, helping people feel prepared to act under pressure.
Providing this training not only empowers residents with life-saving skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility and community. It allows them to play an active role in ensuring the safety of those around them, reinforcing the idea that every person, regardless of their housing status, can contribute positively in an emergency situation.
