Observed on August 31 every year, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) seeks to create better understanding of what an overdose is and some of the reasons they happen, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use.
In line with the theme for 2024, “Together we can”, we are highlighting the strength of coming together and standing in support of those affected by the tragedy of overdose.
Homeless services can play a pivotal role in ending overdose by implementing a range of harm reduction, support, and education initiatives. Here are a few strategies that Jimmy’s adopts to help prevent overdoses:
Naloxone Distribution and Training: We ensure all staff and residents are trained in the use of naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. We also provide free naloxone kits to residents.
Non-Judgmental Approach: We foster an environment that is non-judgmental and supportive, encouraging residents to seek help without fear of stigma or punishment.
Partnerships with Healthcare Providers: Jimmy’s has a close relationship with local drug and alcohol agencies to support residents who may be at risk of overdose.
The drug and alcohol service in Cambridge (CGL) run regular drop in sessions at Jimmy’s. Our support workers very much encourage our residents to engage with the service to try and help stabilise their drug and alcohol use, then again should they wish to come off drugs completely further down the line, but only if that is what they want to work towards.
